File Hash Checker

Calculate file MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 locally. Drag in a file, track chunked calculation progress, cancel, and compare an expected digest. No uploads.

About this tool

Choose or drop a file to calculate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512 from the original bytes. Chunked processing includes progress and cancellation; compare an expected digest without uploading your file.

Best use cases

  • Compare downloaded software or archives with a publisher's expected digest.
  • Compare file copies to identify changes during transfer or storage.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop one file and select at least one hash algorithm.
  2. Select Calculate file hashes and monitor progress; cancel large calculations at any time.
  3. Copy results or paste an expected hexadecimal digest. Case and surrounding whitespace are ignored.

FAQ

How is this different from text hashing?

This tool reads original file bytes without text decoding or including the filename. Binary data, encodings, and line endings are hashed as stored.

Is my file uploaded?

No. A browser Worker hashes the file in chunks; cancellation terminates that calculation.

Does a matching digest prove a file is trustworthy?

A digest supports integrity comparisons but cannot establish trust in a file's source. Obtain the expected digest from a trusted source.
